Love Letter to Self
Love Letters to Self, 2022, projection of hand processed Super 8mm film, marker, 3 min

For Love Letters to Self, I invited people into my home, where they shared love letters out loud that they had written to themselves. After, they were asked to type them on a typewriter. I took their portraits using my film camera, recorded footage on my Super 8 camera, and recorded the audio of the space as well at the studio inside the typewriter using a contact mic. I witnessed vulnerability during these sessions which made it seem like a holy space. Slowing down, pressing each letter and giving oneself’s affirmation out loud and in front of another person can be a modality of healing.
The process, projection and viewing experience embraces the element of the sacred art of making and “the risk” that comes with slow form art making. Acting as a counter-practice to the digital times of larger, spectacular productions, this work embraces the small art forms and in doing so encourages and prioritizes the importance of connection and beauty through meditative acts.
